The Green Room

E-VENGE

by R. Lett

I don’t sleep well, it true.

You see Jennifer23 is back. The adventures of Jennifer 23 continue. When last we talked, Jennifer23 was born online and had a lesbian affair. (editor's note: for those of you who aren't familiar with Jennifer23, she is an internet made up persona, or, to put it bluntly, the author posing as a lesbian online).

Since then she has been growing in her depth, complexity and attitude. It would seem that she has become protective of me. Some slight, or disregard of me in the 3-D world and Jennifer gets to scheming.

But now she’s gone too far.

I had an intense relationship with an actress I had worked with, but because of her age and my position as her director, her friends and family never gave me a chance.

Throughout the six months of the relationship, her older sister pulled all sorts of emotional blackmail to get us apart. My girlfriend had made it clear to me that her sister had sabotaged and squished any attempts by her to advance past the same mediocre path as her sister.

Sharing her life became so antagonistic, that she and I, even though we were both single, had to sneak around for the last couple of months of the relationship. This pressure, plus a growing realization that my girlfriend was central to all this acrimony, caused the relationship to disintegrate. I moved on.

Jennifer23, my online alter ego, however, held a grudge. Secretly obtaining an email address or two, she was able to secure the e-mail address of my ex's sister’s boyfriend. He lived in Europe, and my ex had told me about the many times that her sister had been unfaithful to him.

My ex’s sister had sabotaged my relationship, and so Jennifer23 thought she would do the same to her. Claiming to be the ex-girlfriend of one of the sister’s clandestine flings, she sent an enraged email to the boyfriend, telling him what a whore his girlfriend was for stealing her boyfriend.

Jennifer23, motivated out of e-venge, had once again began the slippery slope of E-venge.

The seed of doubt planted, the European cuckold, pressed jennifer23 for more details – which she fabricated and provided. Vague, but informed enough by Jennifer’s online surveillance, the free trips to Europe for my ex’s sister dried up, as she was forced to deal with her newly-informed boyfriend questions.

This was not enough for Jennifer23. When I sustained a final heartless backstab, and was vulnerable to her, she decided to address the continued bullying that the older sister was wielding on everyone, especially my ex and myself,.

So she found the bully’s phone number. Then tricked me into to calling it. The out-of-the-blue phone call, then content of which was to assure her that she can not bully everyone, was perceived as a threat, no doubt, and I received a phone call from the Vancouver city police that my ex had filed a complaint, and I was to have no contact with her or her family again.

Jennifer23 had implicated me, the bitch. I know what she was thinking, I understand, she was standing up for someone - but it had to stop.

Last Saturday, I was performing at my usual club when I saw two men scrutinizing me. As I walked past them, I heard one say to the other, “Was that him, the guy that just walked by us?” Seemingly, the bully’s boyfriend had arrived from Europe.

The connection between Jennifer23 using her identity to get the phone number, and then my use of it, had created the connection to me in the 3-D world.

These men where clearly coming off-line to get me. Or is it Jennifer23 that is after me? She sent them, really.

And so now I am looking over my shoulder online and off, wondering where she will pop up next. Wondering what dimension she will move in next. And now, I feel the pressure of her presence. She is ready to do battle, and I am constantly holding her back. But for how long?

E-venge is a slow process – when often days pass between the slap and the smack. And she is patient. E-venge is also best served cold.

I have tried to sign off, but she is still there. And she’ll wait, for her opening. Does Jennifer23 exist? I wish she didn’t. She has free will, and because she is cyber born, faces no real punishment - only unreal punishment, banishment or worse. If I could let her email lapse, she would be gone. I think. Dr. Frankenstein probably didn’t sleep well either.
