McCool's Speakeasy

THIS ONE'S FOR SPORTY

Yes, I'm over the age of six and I'm devoting some of my precious time to a Spice Girl, someone who I don't even know and someone who makes a trillion more than li'l o'l me! But, I figure it's all in the name of 'Girl Power'. Us chicks have to stick together you know!

Now admittedly, I'm not a huge Spice Girl fan. I don't exactly come home at the end of a hard day's work and listen to:

'I tell ya what I want, what I really, really want...
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna really, really, really, really,
Zig-a-zig-ah!'

However, in their hay day, I caught 'the girls' on the odd award show or MuchMusic interview and found them rather amusing. I guess you could say I dug their 'everyday girl' quality. And if I had to choose a favorite (and everybody does!), it's... you guessed it...Sporty!

Why Sporty? Well because of the gold tooth, the football obsession, the tracksuit fashion, and the acrobatics. In short, because she's different, not your average creamy smooth pop star! When you think about it, 'difference' is actually what all the Spice Girls cashed in on. I guess you could say Sporty's difference spoke to me the most. I mean shit, she can even sing! And I'd be lying if I didn't mention that I was always somewhat fascinated with how fit she was!

Needless to say I was quite surprised to hear about her rapid weight gain via the evil media who have renamed her 'Sumo Spice'. I was equally surprised to find that the reason why she was 'so fit' was because she had been over exercising and starving herself, causing her to later balloon when she did start eating.

Why am I telling you all this? I told you for the ever so important cause of 'Girl Power'! In hopes of drawing attention to the fact that it's high time us girls make efforts to stop the vicious 'weight' cycle- seeing that we are continually the most prominent victims of it.

It seems that most of us not only admire but also even try to live up to unrealistic images. I admired Sporty. She probably admired the whole thin pop star image (i.e. Madonna and her incessant yoga) and boom! The cycle continues. I realize it's hard to break a cycle that plagues countless women in the public eye as well as everyday life and begins weaving around us girls as early as the Elementary School playground. However, it stands to reason that talking about it is the first step in the direction of a solution. And while eating disorders have already been discussed at length by many, I believe sometimes there is (girl) power in numbers! It certainly can't hurt!

This is why I feel the need to take the time to urge y'all to remember, in the words of Morissey:

'Some girls are bigger than others,
Some girls' mothers are bigger than other girls' mothers'

AND THAT'S O.K!

And it is ultimately for this reason that today, rather than ridicule her, I salute 'Sporty' who is still my favorite 'Spice Girl'. Why? Because her weight fluctuation changes none of the other things I like about her. In fact, it enhances her difference as a pop star not to mention her similarity to all of us non-perfect, non-pop stars like li'l ol' me! And though I may no longer marvel at how fit she is, I will know when I'm looking at her that I'm looking at a realistic image for a change - one that's healthier and thus, more powerful for her, me and all of us girls! After all, variety is the 'spice' of life!
