Boobs the Bartender

Happy spring to all our avivalasvegas.com readers! My drink recipe and featured fictional nugget are both in a way about discovery.

Who knew that a martini could be so good with chocolate? Who knew that a good part of life is discovering that you've evolved? I think life should be imbued with optimism, a knowledge that half the battle is finding out what is not going to work for you and of course lots of martinis!

The Chocolate Martini

  • 1.5 oz. of Vodka (try Vanilla infused for extra taste!)
  • 3/4 oz. of White Crème de Cocoa
  • 1 Hershey's Hug

Shake up these lovely liquids in shaker with ice, lots of ice, until very chilly.

Serve in a martini glass rimmed with cocoa powder and place the "hug" point up in the bottom.

Sip and enjoy. I dare you to drink more than two...

You Can Never Go Back-And Why Would You Want To?

Spring was everywhere but the fetid air overpowered the fresh scents of a new season. Toronto was not living up to its reputation of vibrancy in the face of an unexpected eighty degrees in early April. Wanda was there to experience the thrill of a city that once delivered challenges and an odd kind of desperate romance. Instead, everything looked shabby and people rushed around with a constancy that made her think of rats in a maze.

She tried to focus on the pulsing excitement that once drove her out on the sidewalk late at night just to listen to the hum of activity that gave the city magic. No doubt her senses had been sharpened when she last lived in Toronto by the wildly unrestrained sex that she enjoyed with Tyrone. He was the laziest of men but once engaged he performed with a regularity that left him exhausted and able to sleep for fourteen hours straight while she was at work.

Did she miss being with a man devoid of ambition? No. Did she miss having a sex life? Yes! The city seemed to mock her at every turn. She remembered wandering through Kensington Market hand in hand with him, madly drinking beers at the Black Bull with him and long streetcar rides to be with him. Her whole life had been "him" until she could take it no more.

For Wanda it had been a perseverance test to stay in love with Tyrone. Never mind that he was perfectly content to live his life on welfare- he spent most of his life in bars playing darts or selling counterfeit copies of bus tickets for beer money. He even spent days attempting to rent an empty basement suite in the house they were living in which would have greatly surprised the landlord. He was everything a gal would dread in a boyfriend and for years she missed him.

Her return trip almost ten years later, was putting the whole romance in perspective. Not only did Toronto fail to reawaken her romantic ideal of what had been, it effectively squashed any possibility of Wanda looking back on Tyrone with fondness. Her successful friends were mostly couple with mortgages and solid, hard-won relationships. They all tolerated the city for the monetary success and opportunities it afforded them. Wanda thought it ironic that they talked so much of getting away and especially visiting her in Vancouver.

On the plane home she anticipated the fresh sea air, the contentment of being single and the joy of having only herself to take care of. She doubted she‚d ever return to Toronto or to any relationship that didn't offer her the love she deserved.
